COVER LETTER

Dear Kristina

Before I start I want to inform you that this is an application for the job CONSULTANT MANAGER ASSISTANT at Academic Work in Örebro.

My name is Helene Hollywood and I’m studying Industrial engineering and management, focused on IT- technology and communication at Royal Institute of Technology (KTH).
I have done some smaller work tasks for Academic Work in the past and I have enjoyed it very much. I like to work extra, because that is when I perform as best. Many tasks in the air are something that I like and I love to plan how my week will be full of different kinds of activities.

To recruit people for Academic Work will be very instructive for me. To find those golden coins out there that you can match with a service that is offered would be very satisfying. I believe not only that it would be a good experience for me, but also that you would benefit by having a driven person with high stress resistance and who like to work hard.

I have a good eye for service and have experienced this as both a waitress and while working in a help-desk at Hewlett Packard (HP). This is something that i feel is important at almost any job and I'm sure my knowledge about this will come handy at your company.

I like how your organization is structured and would enjoy a good partnership. I see my education as an advantage because I have knowledge from many different parts, such as economics, management, engineering and IT.

One of my biggest interests are sports, and I have done a lot of different kind of things, playing in teams, coaching and done referees. What I have experienced from that will also be applicable in this job, since I have good leader skills, I see myself as a great team player and I know how to make fast decisions.

Right now I’m in Singapore on an exchange semester and will be home in Örebro June 1. I can start working earlier if needed, but then it will be through my computer.

I have attached my resume in this email and I'm looking forward to hear from you. Please contact me on +00123-234567 or Helene@hello.com if you find have any questions.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Helene Hollywood

Resolving Interpersonal Conflict

I am on my way to work, full of energy. Today I’m taking the car but when I start to drive I feel that something is wrong… Oh great, a flat tire. I have to ride my bike instead and a lot of time has passed. I’m in a hurry and when I changed my car key for the bike I accidently left my USB at home.

Today we are meeting a very important client so I can’t be late, if they buy our product, they will sell it all over the country. I’m supposed to meet my colleague Maria at 7.45, the meeting starts at 8:00. I’m there in time, but no Maria. I try to call her but she doesn’t answer. The time is passing by fast, and it’s getting closer to 8, still no Maria.

I’m really stressed right now because Maria has the PowerPoint, and since I forgot my USB I need her copy. I’m starting to get upset, it’s not the first time she is late. I’m starting to think of what Maria did in this project, because I’m the one who planned everything, and I even did the Powerpoint.

Now our client comes and what should I say? I have prepared coffee and tea for them so I’m starting with that. I’ve also ordered some sandwiches, but they have not been delivered. Great.

After the Meeting:

When Maria finally shows up with her latte, her hair styled and she doesn’t even look stressed I couldn’t hold it in. I’m starting to yell at her

         - How stupid are you? Don’t you have a brain? I’m so sick of you being late all the time. It feels like you don’t even care. We might have lost this client now thanks to you.
         - I emailed you everything last night and said that I couldn’t come.
         - Yeah right, that’s just something you made up. I did not get an email.

Later I find her email in the junk mail, I feel a little bit dumb, but at the same time, what could have been more important than our big client? However, it wasn’t her fault that I had a flat tire, or that I forgot my USB, or that the sandwiches didn’t come. Almost everything was my own fault

I walk over to her office to talk to her, but she says she doesn’t have time. I explain that I want to apologize for how I acted, and that a lot of things went wrong this morning. But that I’m still a little bit disappointed because she didn’t come. She says that we can just forget that this happened, but I can see that she is not very happy. I walk back to my room.

What went wrong? Because I feel that this conflict isn’t solved, though she said that we could forget about it.

Effective Communication

I’ve always wanted to be a leader, and you can be a good leader in so many ways. But for me, the most important part of being a leader is the communication. You have people that need to work together, both with and without you. You need to tell them what to do, what to not do and maybe you shouldn’t tell them what to do.
However, you are responsible for making this team work as good as possible and really get as much out of it as possible. You can’t just give them instructions and think that they’ll know how to do it. You need to communicate, and communicate effective.
How you talk, how you stand, how you look are all different things that send special kind of message and it’s important to know about this. I don’t think it’s necessary to know exactly how everything can be perceived, but to know that these things are important to think about when you are in special situations.
I need to know how to present myself in different kind of situations, in that matter know what to wear and what to say. who am I, and what does people think of me? I want people to respect me, not just because I would like to be the boss/leader, but in all situations. I want people to feel trust and fellowship with me so that they are comfortable expressing their feelings, but at the same time know that I’m actually their boss and not just a friend, how do you do this?  I would like to find out.
And what’s out there that I don’t know? What parts of communication have I never thought about? I want to discover things that right now are UNKNOWN! Effective communication is an important tool for me so that I can become a good workmate, a good friend, a good leader and a great person.

Best Regards
Helene
